Serving at St Mary’s

As an every-member-led church, we want to encourage everyone to play their part in church life.

Following the example of Jesus — who came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45) — we believe serving is a vital part of discipleship.

That said, there’s no pressure. We usually encourage people to get to know us first, and we don’t normally ask anyone to serve in their first six months with us.

But if you’ve been around a little while and would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you. Serving can be a great way to connect with others and feel more at home in the church family. Please fill out this form, and someone will be in touch.

Where might I serve?

Here’s just a snapshot of areas where people currently serve:

  • Children’s & Youth teams — help with our parent-and-toddler group, or children’s and youth groups on Sundays or in the week
  • Sunday teams — welcome, refreshments, music, tech/AV, livestream, and more
  • Groups & hospitality — support our daily “Welcome Space”, serve refreshments, or help host events
  • Ministry Trainee Programme — hands-on experience across church life, with training and support (see Ministry Trainee page for more details)

What to expect

  • Training & team support — Each team has leaders who will help you learn and grow in your role. You’ll be given a clear role description, appropriate training, and regular support along the way.
  • Pastoral oversight & care — Serving happens in community — you’ll be looked after by your team and, where appropriate, connected to staff or ministry mentors. You won’t be left to figure things out on your own.
