St Mary’s has a long and rich history of Christian worship in East Basingstoke.
There’s been a church on this site since Anglo-Saxon times, and for centuries people have gathered here to know and follow Jesus.
The Old Church (a Grade II listed building) includes features from 1770, 1880, and 1912. In 1970, a church hall and new rectory were built to support a growing and active congregation.
By the 1980s, St Mary’s was growing significantly, and it became clear that we needed more space to gather and serve. In response, the Auditorium was built on the site of the original car park. The former rectory and gardens were purchased by the church and transformed into extra parking and an annexe for offices and classrooms.
We also added a new reception and atrium, and upgraded the kitchen and toilets. The whole project was completed in 1995, with thanks to God—and the generosity of many people—at a cost of £1 million.
In 2002, the Old Church was carefully renovated. A partition wall was added to create a dedicated space for smaller meetings and events.
We’re always looking at how to make the most of the site God has entrusted to us—so that it can keep serving both the church family and our wider community for many years to come.
